Authentication using fingerprints on our smartphones has been around a while. Now, biometric features can be used for secure payment as well. At the beginning of the year, Wirecard and partner company Oney implemented the first biometric payment system in Romania. An app allows payment via QR code or fingerprint in more than 30 Auchan branch stores as well.
According to a recent international survey by Oxford University and Mastercard, a large majority of respondents (93%) prefer biometric to password authentication when verifying payment. In addition to fingerprint payment, it would be possible to also make easy and secure payments using on-site palm scanners. Prototypes for this are already available on the market and provide a modern alternative to long lines at the register and inconvenient payment processes.
Solutions that use biometric features for authentication are also useful in non-retail situations, such as entrance control for music festivals and sport events or for travel, such as public regional transport or airports. Consumers would have a seamless, digital payment and shopping experience and wouldn’t need their wallets or even smartphones while on the go.
